Artemis, is a brand new limited edition resin and mixed media assemblage. This contemporary interpretation of Artemis distills the visual language of Kuksi’s large scale mixed media works into an intimately sized, affordable edition that includes all the hallmarks of the artist’s instantly recognizable style. Kuksi’s adoration for Greek mythology and ornate Rococo design combine to explore myth, culture, and death. While the central figures for each sculpture are the same, every edition is individually adorned and painted by the artist to create 35 unique works.

With a fierce dog by her side, Kuksi’s Artemis points her bow towards an imagined beast or foe. Tiny embellishments that relate to the goddess’ major and minor attributes are added to each edition. In Greek mythology, Artemis is the Olympian goddess of the hunt, the moon, and chastity, later becoming associated with childbirth and nature too. She is the embodiment of the sportsman’s ideal, killing and protecting game, especially the young, which landed her the Homeric title, “Mistress of Animals.” Artemis is often depicted as a young and beautiful huntress carrying a bow with a quiver full of arrows, wearing a short tunic, and accompanied by a stag, doe, or hunting dog. As a moon goddess, she is represented as wearing a long robe and a crescent moon crown.

Artemis pairs perfectly with Kuksi’s 2020 limited edition sculpture, Venus and Adonis, which re-imagines the star-crossed lovers as entering the hunt together. The pair confidently stands next to one another, no longer left to their tragic end. In the original myth, Adonis was killed by a wild boar after ignoring Venus’ prophetic dream, believing he was invincible as the self-described world’s best hunter. Before his death, Artemis attempted to kill Adonis on two occasions over her jealousy of Venus. Shown together, both works leave space for alternative narratives and mythologies, while examining the ramifications of discontent.
